Cross-border tax
Tax residence when your life spans several countries
A practical starting point for coordinating residence, family, income and existing tax obligations before a move to Latin America.

A residence permit is one part of an international life. Your home, family, work and assets may remain connected to several countries long after you receive it.
Separate three decisions
Permission to live in a country, citizenship and tax residence answer different questions. The OECD explains that obtaining residence rights or citizenship does not automatically establish tax residence there, or end it in a previous country. OECD: tax residency.
That distinction should shape the order of your planning. Start with the life you intend to lead, then ask qualified advisers in each relevant jurisdiction to assess its consequences.
Give your advisers a clear picture
Prepare a short overview for your advisers:
- Where each family member currently lives and expects to spend time.
- Homes available to you and significant personal or business connections.
- Employment, business interests and the location where work is actually performed.
- Types of income, assets and existing reporting obligations.
- The intended moving date and decisions that cannot easily be reversed.
This gives your advisers the information they need to identify questions to resolve before the move. A headline tax rate cannot answer them.
Coordinate the advice
Ask your current and destination advisers to work from the same facts and proposed timetable. Their written assessment should identify any overlap, relevant treaty questions, filings and evidence you will need to retain. A bank account, an identity card and a tax-residence certificate should each be considered in their proper context.
Start with the whole plan
Latin Privilege Advisory can help frame your relocation objectives and coordinate the next steps with the relevant specialists. Compare our residency approaches, or describe your situation so we can define an appropriate assessment.
Compare what each document establishes
| Document or status | Question it addresses |
|---|---|
| Residence permission | The basis on which you may live in a country |
| Identity document | How identity is established in local procedures |
| Tax residence | Which rules determine tax obligations |
| Citizenship | Whether a separate procedure is available and its conditions are met |
Paraguay income-source questions and Uruguay’s 2026 regime require different information for assessment. Do not transfer a conclusion from one country to another.
