José Ignacio · Uruguay
At LUZ, I like the scale of things: eight suites in the countryside, vineyards around you and José Ignacio a short drive away. It is a place where I would happily leave part of the day unplanned.
The photographs from my stay bring back the smaller pleasures: a chessboard by the fire, a glass at the table beside the pool and the covered terrace after dark. Those are the moments I wanted to add to the wider views of the lodge.
For clients considering life on Uruguay’s coast, I see LUZ as a countryside base for a Private Discovery Visit, with time to see neighbourhoods, homes and schools on an itinerary shaped around you. Once you live in the region, it can take on another role: a few days among the vines, a meal worth lingering over and the pleasure of returning somewhere familiar.
FROM MY STAY
An afternoon at LUZ.
Vineyards beneath a changing sky, a long table by the pool and the fire in the lounge. The landscape draws you here; these smaller moments give a stay its own character. A few details from my October visit, alongside the wider views of the lodge.

A seat by the fire
There is a low table with a chessboard in the sitting room, logs beside the hearth and room to settle in for the evening. I like finding a shared space that feels this personal. It makes staying at the lodge part of the pleasure of the trip.
LUZ sits among vineyards and olive trees. Its eight suites have different layouts and outlooks, so the choice can be quite personal: the garden, the vines, the view you would like to wake up to.

The coast and the countryside
José Ignacio is close by, with its lighthouse, village streets and two different beaches: Brava to the east and Mansa to the west. Inland, the landscape opens towards the lagoon and the vineyards. A stay here lets you get to know both.
For someone considering life on this coast, I would suggest leaving time for ordinary journeys as well as special outings. Spend a morning in the village, see a neighbourhood that interests you and notice how the drive back feels. These are useful discoveries when you begin to imagine living somewhere.
Time at the table
The photograph of a glass beside the pool is a small record of my visit. The striped fabric, the wooden table and the water tell you as much about the atmosphere as a broad view of the grounds.
The lodge’s kitchen works with seasonal local produce. A meal here can be a good reason to stay close for the day. There are also activities around the property, from cycling and tennis to time on the lagoon, for days when you feel like being out.

After sunset
I kept a photograph of the covered terrace after dark: a long wooden table, red columns and lights along the roof. Beside the vineyard photographs, it tells another part of the story of staying here.
I recommend LUZ to clients who enjoy some privacy and a smaller hotel, with the coast within reach. It could be a base while you explore this part of Uruguay, or somewhere you return to for a few days once you live here. Its place in Pearls comes from that simple wish to go back.
The coast, within reach
From Montevideo
Continue east by road to José Ignacio, then inland to LUZ on Camino Escuela 41. The lodge places itself around ten minutes by car from the village. If you arrive by private aircraft, Carrasco and Punta del Este both have dedicated general-aviation terminals; the journey continues by road to the lodge.
From Buenos Aires
Take the ferry across the Río de la Plata to Montevideo and continue by road along Uruguay’s coast to José Ignacio. Keep the crossing and onward transfer in the same plan, so the journey ends at the lodge.
Ferry sailings, flight arrangements and onward transfers are planned for your dates. During a Discovery Visit, allow time for the journeys between the lodge, neighbourhoods and appointments.
