FROM ELENA’S HOTEL COLLECTION

Iguassu Falls · Brazil

I first stayed at Cataratas in December 2024. The falls are what draw you here, but the hotel is part of what makes me want to return: its pink façade against the forest, the blue-and-white tiles and the view of water through the trees.

I like being able to spend a few days with a place this extraordinary. There is time to go back to the falls, sit down for a long meal and enjoy the hotel between outings. These photographs are a few of the details I brought home.

I recommend Cataratas to clients who want their life in the Privilege Triangle to include discoveries further afield. Once Buenos Aires, Montevideo or Asunción is home, a few days beside the falls can become a journey you return to: time in the forest, Brazilian cooking and a setting that changes the rhythm of your week.

FROM MY STAY

The falls, a little closer.

At the water’s edge, the mist and movement fill the view. Back at the hotel, the evening has a different rhythm: the pink entrance after dark, a softly lit dining room and a table set for dinner. These photographs and this short film are a few moments from my stay.

Time beside the falls

Hotel das Cataratas is inside Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park. Guests have access to the falls before the gates open and after the day visitors leave. It is a remarkable reason to stay here: one of the world’s great natural wonders, with time to experience it at the quieter ends of the day.

The hotel is close enough for the falls to become part of the stay. You can return to a viewpoint in a different light, then make your way back through the gardens. That is the visit I would recommend making room for.

A hotel with its own character

Inside, there are painted tiles, dark wood, floral fabrics and rooms that belong to this setting. I enjoy those details as much as a grand view. Together they give the hotel a warmth that comes through in my photographs.

Rooms and suites offer different layouts and outlooks. When planning a stay, I would begin with the view and the space you want to come back to after a morning outdoors.

A little theatre at the table

One photograph I kept is of a golden egg-shaped dish, surrounded by leaves and tiny flowers. It is a lovely contrast to the scale of the landscape outside: a small, carefully composed moment at the table.

The hotel’s restaurants include Brazilian cooking at Y and poolside dining at Ipê. I would leave an evening for the hotel itself, with time for dinner and the pleasure of seeing the pink entrance lit after dark.

A place to come back to

The postcards and small keepsakes from my stay bring the whole visit back together: the falls, the hotel and the details in between. That is how a place earns a spot in this collection. After the first excitement has settled, I still want to go back.

From a home in the Privilege Triangle, Cataratas can be a few days away in another part of the region. There is more to discover around Foz do Iguaçu, including the meeting of the rivers at Marco das Três Fronteiras. For me, I would begin with enough time beside the falls.

From the Triangle to the falls

From Buenos Aires

Fly direct to Puerto Iguazú (IGR), on the Argentine side, then continue by car across the border to the hotel in Brazil. Belmond lists the transfer from IGR at around an hour; allow extra time for border formalities. Foz do Iguaçu (IGU) is the Brazilian airport, with a shorter transfer to the property.

Choose the airport together with your transfer. Flights, border entry requirements and transfer arrangements should be checked for your travel dates.
