Argentina Rentista residence: qualifying income and preparation

Argentina’s Rentista route requires qualifying income from assets. Check which income counts, the current threshold and the evidence you will need.

Argentina’s Rentista category is not a general residence route for anyone paid from abroad. The official procedure requires qualifying income from assets and excludes remuneration for personal work.

Start with the nature of the income

The published minimum is five Salarios Mínimos Vitales y Móviles (SMVM). A dollar equivalent can become outdated as the statutory minimum and exchange rate change. Meeting the threshold is only part of the assessment. The source of the income and supporting evidence also matter.

Income or circumstance Point to establish
Rent from property Ownership, receipt and documentary evidence
Financial instruments The nature and regularity of the qualifying benefit
Participation in a company What the payment represents and the evidence supporting it
Salary or personal services The official category excludes remuneration for personal work

These examples identify questions for a professional assessment; they do not establish eligibility. Have the relevant professional assess the complete facts, including the form in which income is received and the authority’s current requirements.

Prepare the personal documents too

Review identity, civil-status and criminal-record documents against the current checklist. Ask about validity periods, legalisation and translation before ordering certificates. Plan the application around when your documents will be ready, allowing for the steps that depend on them.

A residence application and tax residence are separate matters. Consider your existing obligations, activity and plans before moving. Opening a bank account is also a separate onboarding decision; an immigration status does not guarantee acceptance by a bank.

Keep citizenship advice separate

Naturalisation has separate residence and procedural requirements. The published application route asks for two years of continuous lawful residence without foreign departures. A July 2026 report from the federal prosecution service records a court ruling declaring DNU 366/2025 void. Have counsel check the applicable route, travel requirements and subsequent appellate position for your case. A residence period is not a passport-delivery timetable.
